School of Engineering

ECE

Electronic and Computer Engineering is a broad discipline that spans physics, devices, circuits, computing, and algorithms. It enables and combines novel technologies for devices and systems, such as electronic eyes, 3D displays, smartphones, laptops, robots, generative AI, and 5G/6G networks. Our curriculum enables students to master fundamental and frontier knowledge in core technology areas. Hands-on projects that characterize our teaching and research programs are supported by world-class laboratories and central research facilities, including the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility, the Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility, and the Institute of Integrated Circuits and Systems. Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering

BEng in ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING Electronic engineers develop technologies that harness the flow of energy and information in electrical form, vastly improving our quality of life. The Electronic Engineering (ELEC) major is a general degree program with a broad coverage of all ECE areas. It offers a comprehensive curriculum of electronic engineering principles and applications in microelectronics, photonics, integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, data science, signal processing, control and robotic systems, wireless communications and networks, and quantum engineering. Students can explore areas of interest that span materials, devices, and systems. BEng in ELEC graduates are well-equipped to assume technical and administrative roles in a variety of electronics-related industries, such as machine learning engineer, semiconductor chip designer, communications engineer, robotics scientist, bioinformatics analyst, and automation systems architect.

BEng in MICROELECTRONICS AND INTEGRATED CIRCUITS

Semiconductors are fundamental to contemporary technologies, driving everything from mobile phones to personal computers. They manage data, operate software, and facilitate connectivity. This industry is at the heart of innovation, economic development, and sector-wide technological progress. The Microelectronics and Integrated Circuits (MEIC) program offers practical experience in chip design and nanofabrication and emphasizes hands-on projects, including cleanroom fabrication of semiconductor chips, integrated circuit (IC) layout design and tape-out, and device/circuit measurements, by leveraging our unique shared central research facilities in Hong Kong. BEng in MEIC graduates can pursue careers in semiconductor microelectronics and optoelectronics design, fabrication and advanced packaging processes, IC and system design, semiconductor chip technology and product development, semiconductor chip testing and quality control, microelectronics and IC technology marketing, intellectual property protection, and various other fields within the fast- expanding microelectronics and IC industry ecosystem.
