Influence

W hen Moon decided to attend HKUST, she was ready to push herself academically and expected a straightforward learning journey. She was pleasantly surprised to discover that the HKUST business program offered a far broader scope, setting her on a path different from the traditional ones pursued by other business students. She could not have envisioned how her marketing major would inspire her future career as a content creator and influencer. Today, she continues to draw upon what she learned in the program as her digital profile and business thrive and grow. Moon initially chose the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program for its wide range of subjects and flexible curriculum. “The BBA program at HKUST has a good reputation and offers numerous career paths,” she says. “The university seemed focused on academics, and I thought that’s all I needed.” She was pleased to discover that there was also an inclusive and encouraging culture at HKUST that would play an equally important role in shaping her academic and professional journey. “Everyone was very hardworking, but HKUST is also very good at encouraging everyone to start their own business and to plan their unique career paths,” Moon adds. While exploring different fields within the BBA program, Moon discovered her passion for marketing. “In our classes, we had to study a lot of interesting worldwide marketing cases,” she says. “Marketing taught me about human interaction and how to communicate with different people.” Learning from case studies inspired her and sparked her creativity, leading her to start filming social media content that really resonated with audiences. This boosted her influence, making her a sought-after KOL on Instagram, where she partners with brands and businesses to engage, educate, and entertain.

HKUST was supportive of her entrepreneurial spirit and helped foster her content-creation aspirations. “Some of my videos were filmed on campus, and the university was very supportive in helping me get the permissions I needed,” Moon says. She feels this really showcased the university’s commitment to student initiatives. Moon’s elaborate videos often feature big casts of people and highlight life at HKUST with unique and playful pranks. Fun and upbeat, her content is popular as few others are producing a similar style here in Hong Kong. A spirit of collaboration was part of the program, and the connections Moon made at HKUST have been invaluable. “The people I met at HKUST – my peers – have been incredibly supportive. One of my friends became a member of an organisation and helped me join some charity events to build my profile and popularity,” she says. The strong network of peers and alumni has also introduced her to new projects and job opportunities. “All the students are friends, and many are in the marketing field after graduation. My classmates and PR professionals continue to introduce me to new projects and jobs, and I support them where I can, too,” she adds. Moon is passionate about sharing her positive experiences at HKUST with others, especially secondary school students who follow her content. “I always tell my audience that HKUST is a good place to spend your university life. It balances your academic life and helps you shape your career path,” she says. HKUST’s environment fosters both practical and creative thinking. “It’s a great environment for both pragmatic, analytical individuals and those who are creative and open-minded,” she says. “I learned at HKUST that in the world of business, there’s space for all kinds of people.”

HKUST is a place that encourages you to explore different paths and supports your unique career goals.

S hiny may have excelled in come from her belief in the value of connecting with people and exploring ideas beyond numbers. Business studies at HKUST combined her aptitude for mathematics with her passion for interpersonal interaction, “I chose the best business school in Hong Kong,” she recalls. Shiny felt right at home in a proactive, diverse, and vibrant cohort of peers, all energised to seek opportunities, build connections, and support one another. “HKUST students have a global network and are focused on sharing mathematics in secondary school, but she always knew that success would knowledge,” says Shiny, “everyone is really hardworking, but we share in one another’s progress and ambition, too.” One of the most impactful experiences for Shiny at HKUST was joining Project MELO, a year-long fellowship where passionate, future-focused students collaborate with CEOs to drive positive change for social impact in Hong Kong. This initiative pairs four students with a CEO to work on a co-creation project. “I worked with Randy Lai, CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong,” Shiny shares. On the recommendation of HKUST Connect, Shiny entered the “Connect4Change” competition with a team. Their education-focused solution for tackling climate change won first place. The experience brought together all of Shiny’s strengths, passions, and visions for the future in a practical, real-world opportunity. Shiny transitioned from fellow to committee member in her second year, honing her leadership skills by stepping up to manage the project's organisation. “HKUST nurtures essential business skills like communication and leadership,” says Shiny, “and I really developed an entrepreneurial mindset during my time there.” All students are encouraged to find solutions independently and think innovatively. Engaging with industry experts in informal settings, such as coffee chats, gives students real insights into the business world. One notable interaction was with Bryan Li, CEO of

Bank of East Asia, whose discussion on Hong Kong’s role as a financial hub inspired Shiny’s career in banking. Shiny’s curiosity flourished within HKUST’s forward-thinking curriculum. Her Operations Management and Information Systems courses embraced technologies not typically associated with business studies, such as ERP systems and Python. For Shiny, her understanding of these tools continues to be instrumental in how she performs critical daily tasks in her banking career today. The combination of experiences from Project MELO and her technical skills equipped Shiny with a holistic perspective and energised her for a dynamic impactful career. University life at HKUST is challenging but rewarding. The rigorous coursework equips students with essential skills such as how to conduct research, persuade teams, and develop interpersonal skills – key attributes for professional success. “The persuasion and interpersonal skills that I gained at HKUST are invaluable,” says Shiny, “it also brought home the importance of having a plan.” The structured approach to internships, community projects, and academics helped her make the most of her time at university. From an international exchange at Sydney’s Macquarie University to teaching English in Cambodia, each milestone has significantly shaped her personal and professional growth. It’s clear that her time at HKUST has had a lasting impact. Meeting inspiring individuals and participating in diverse activities has influenced Shiny’s outlook and career trajectory. “In my junior years, I enhanced my exposure through exchanges. In the middle years, I focused on studies and community programs. Finally, in the last years, I did internships and met business leaders,” she recounts. This well-rounded approach ensured she was well-prepared for the professional world. As Shiny shares, “HKUST is best for hardworking, proactive people – you’ll be in great company, go on to achieve great things, and make a positive impact together.”

At HKUST you really can connect with influential figures and embrace opportunities. Impact

M ichelle has always had a passion for combining business acumen with sustainability – even if it meant stepping outside her comfort zone. In secondary school, she was drawn to community service projects that focused on the problems others often ignored, such as plastic and textile waste. For Michelle, finding a business program that matched her drive was going to be a challenge. Traditional business majors felt too outdated for her vision; she sought a more interdisciplinary approach that would let her delve deeper into sustainability while developing strong financial skills. The Sustainable and Green Finance Program (SGFN) at HKUST was the perfect match. This pioneering program is the first of its kind in Hong Kong, equipping students with knowledge and skills in business and finance to serve the course of sustainable development. By promoting green finance as more than just a trend and designed for students seeking fulfilling careers at the forefront of the industry, it’s no surprise that the program caught Michelle’s eye. “HKUST is an established university, but I was excited by this new major that integrates finance with scientific approaches to sustainability,” she explains. The program’s interdisciplinary nature and focus on real-world applications allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of green finance and its practical implications – and she has been quick to put her major to good use, exploring all the opportunities offered by HKUST to further fuel her aspirations. The hands-on learning experiences at HKUST brought together practical case studies and real-world applications for Michelle, “We looked at how green finance can work in different industries, like fashion and consulting firms,” she explains, “and I loved that, because I’m interested in applying my knowledge to luxury sectors like beauty and fashion.” Michelle’s energy is contagious, and she swiftly built networks and communities around herself that fuelled her vision and interests and aligned her with like minds. “Learning how to put myself out there,

networking with people, and connecting with others are vital skills,” she says. By her second year, she had fully embraced new opportunities, participating in case competitions focused on ESG and finance and founding the Sustainable Investment Club (SIC). “I wanted to create a space where students could learn about green finance and connect with industry professionals,” says Michelle. The club’s mission is to educate peers about the importance of green finance and foster connections between students and professionals in the field. Through the SIC, Michelle and her peers analyse various areas, such as new technologies in waste management, and investigate investment opportunities in the green industry. “It’s a way to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry knowledge,” she says. A consultancy group even took note of her drive and talent, offering her an internship that matched her interests. “I’ve always taken the initiative and like to support others,” she says. Being part of the first cohort of the Sustainable and Green Finance Program has been both challenging and rewarding. “It’s a brand-new major, but that's what makes it exciting,” she says. HKUST has given Michelle knowledge and experiences that bring together technical expertise and creative entrepreneurialism. “The program is preparing us to become technical experts and leaders in the field,” she says. The progressive approach of the curriculum has broadened her perspective and equipped her with the skills needed to tackle and invest in industry sustainability challenges. Ambition? She has plenty of it and is excited about the future. “HKUST has done a great job of listening to the market and what the market needs,” says Michelle. More graduates are embracing these new ideas and principles of investing in a sustainable future. “I’m not 100% clear on where I will end up after I graduate, but I’m confident I can apply my skills to different sectors, or even start my own business!”

Striving to push myself beyond my comfort zone is what makes me a promising entrepreneur, and HKUST has supported that. Invest

T imothy’s journey through HKUST Business School is a story about an inclusive and globally-minded educational environment that fostered his can-do attitude. Timothy knew that progress in business and life comes from embracing and exploring different points of view, and the diversity and ratio of international students at HKUST caught the budding entrepreneur’s eye. While his peers were determined, focused, and competitive like him, they were also supportive, friendly, and shared a spirit of camaraderie. Timothy was impressed: “Everyone at HKUST wants to strike a good career after graduation. Whether it’s getting into banks, consultancies, or starting their own businesses, there’s a friendly competitiveness that pushes you to achieve more.” Case competitions were one of the places where Timothy saw this in action. “We usually have around 24 hours to prepare a business solution for a company, like HSBC, and present our proposal. It’s intense but incredibly rewarding.” The pace, demands, and challenges of these competitions weren’t their only benefit. “They were a fantastic way to meet students from other schools around the world,” he says. Timothy travelled to Thailand and Denmark to take part, and here in Hong Kong, met visiting international students who opened his mind to how business problems are approached differently across cultures. Timothy’s time at HKUST included a year- long exchange at Harvard University. “That opportunity came about thanks to the immense support from HKUST faculty and peers,” he notes, “The breadth of opportunities to go overseas for exchanges and international exposure at HKUST is unmatched.” HKUST’s encouragement to explore different paths inspired Timothy. “Some of my peers followed more traditional career paths, but HKUST encourages you to build projects and start your own business,” he says. In 2014,

during his second year, Timothy co-founded a postcard business. Although the idea was well-intentioned, it faced a few hurdles and lacked scalability. Drawing on the knowledge he gained in his course, he continued to fan the flames of his entrepreneurial drive and paved the way for his next venture. The company he is known for today, Spread-It, is a platform for micro-influencers that was directly inspired by his time at HKUST. Realising there was a demand from brands to reach university students, Timothy turned his attention to the popularity of social platforms like Facebook and Instagram, which were widely used by the students around him. Along with his business partner, he turned a trend into a solution by packaging a service that provided access to online KOLs. His business earned him a spot on the list of Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia in Media, Marketing & Advertising in 2020. Timothy attributes much of his entrepreneurial success to the generalist approach of the HKUST business curriculum. “The business school trains you to be a generalist. You don’t specialise too much, but this broad knowledge is crucial when you’re starting a business,” he says. Understanding various aspects like HR, accounting, marketing, and raising capital allowed Timothy to navigate the complexities of building a company. “There’s an Entrepreneurship Centre at HKUST where you can get mentorship and chat with peers who have similar problems,” Timothy notes. The practical guidance he received on issues like finding clients, dealing with company politics, renting office space, and raising capital was invaluable. “Chatting with different faculty members, peers and seniors who had started their businesses helped me navigate the thousands of problems that occur with a startup.” For those interested in developing their careers in the business world or starting their own company, Timothy has some words of advice when making your choice: “The diversity, extensive growth opportunities, and supportive environment at HKUST will help you achieve your goals.”

Integrate

It was clear that HKUST was an inclusive and welcoming school where I would also learn a lot from my peers.”
